A Godly Marriage

August 23, 2010

All this month our pastor has been speaking about marriage. He has brought different couples in different stages of life, with different stories, and also with different painful times they had to walk through. We have talked about what a Godly marriage looks like, as well as what a restored marriage can be.

Today, Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife MaryBeth came to speak about being married for 26 years and the struggles they had to endure when their youngest adopted daughter was killed in an accident. I just love seeing how these couples have allowed God into their hearts to help walk them through these hard times. MaryBeth said something I loved, she said “you have to remember that your spouse isn’t the enemy”. You can read about their story in the book she has written titled Choosing To See

Many times, it’s easy to think of your spouse being a part of the problem instead of the solution. We all have days where we feel that we are the only one making an effort. Why did he leave his dirty dishes on the table? Why didn’t he throw the trash in the trash can? Why didn’t he empty the trash can? All these little things that start to get on our nerves when we are cranky, edgy, tired, etc. It’s during these times when we have to realize that HE isn’t the enemy, he didn’t do (or not do) those things just to make our lives more difficult. When we can confront the facts in such a manner, we can begin to cut our spouses some slack and even relax a bit ourselves. We have days when they feel the same way about us! It’s all about grace and mercy!

I am so thankful that I have a husband that is a good father, goes to church with me, NEVER compares my cooking to his mother’s (that’s a big one ladies!!!), and who appreciates his family and strives every day to provide for us. If you are married I pray that you have that type of husband as well, and if you’re not married then don’t settle for anything less than a Godly husband. Marriage is often hard, but it’s incredibly beautiful at the same time!
